Common Questions

What is curcumin?

Curcumin is a compound extracted from turmeric, a ginger family plant, particularly from it’s rhizomes. 1

What is curcumin used for as a food additive?

If you have ever seen turmeric root, you know that it is in a bright orange colour. Well, curcumin as a food additive is used as a food dye, as it provides this orange-yellow colour. You can also find curcumin in turmeric and curry powder, which are also sometimes used to give foods that specific colouring.

Is curcumin safe to consume?

In EU the allowed curcumin amount as a food additive is between 20 to 500 mg per kg of food. The allowed curcumin concentration in foods differ based on food types. European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has agreed upon acceptable daily intake to be 3 mg per kg of bodyweight per day, which means that this intake level does not pose a significant health risk. 1

Are there any health benefits of curcumin?

Curcumin has been associated with some health benefits, as it is said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. In a 2015 systematic review, curcumin was shown to enhance the body’s defence mechanisms against free radicals by boosting antioxidant activity. In other words, it helps us fight oxidative stress. Nevertheless, curcumin has low bioavailability when taken orally, but this can be significantly improved by pairing it with black pepper, which contain a compound called piperine. 1
